A tufted moss landscape as furniture design
From chair to moss landscape: a student at the Wood and Furniture College tufts his own chair upholstery.
As you probably know, you can rent tufting supplies from Tufting Stuff. Last week, Fos, a student at the Wood and Furniture College in Rotterdam, rented a trimmer to shave 3D effects into his tufting work.
His assignment? Design and build a chair. His execution? No standard upholstery. No ordinary upholstery. But a completely tufted moss landscape. Fantastic! I've always been fascinated by tufted landscapes. Let alone the combination with furniture.
For his very first project, he designed a chair that looks as if it were plucked straight from the forest. Soft, organic shapes. Different heights for the backrest and seat. A vibrant surface that almost resembles real moss, thanks to the varying shades and texture.
He defined the various "moss" tufts with the trimmer. This allowed him to shave height differences, create depth, and bring the landscape to life. The result is beautiful, and you can clearly see the hours of work that went into it. This is also a perfect example of how tufting is more than just machine-tufting wool through the fabric. Tufting is only the first step; the rest follows: gluing, finishing, and trimming your rug. This process often takes longer than the tufting itself. However, paying attention to a beautiful finish on your rug, or in this case, furniture, truly makes your result that much more beautiful.
